The art of upholstering a sofa or armchair
Upholstering furniture is one of the oldest tricks in the books when it comes to Interior Design. There is an enormous abundance of fabrics to choose from, velvet to linen, small minimal patterns to large bold striking prints, the options are endless. Whether you have a beloved existing piece of furniture that requires reupholstering or you are planning to buy furniture and cannot quiet decide which fabric to go for, we are here to help you make the right choice.
Sofas and armchairs are arguably statement pieces in every home. Therefore, careful consideration of fabric as well as function are things one needs to consider when choosing to upholster any piece of furniture. A sofa for a family home for example needs to be upholstered in a fabric that is durable and stain resistant. A favourite trick of ours is to choose an indoor-outdoor fabric. A fabric that has the look and feel of an indoor fabric but with the qualities of an outdoor fabric, inherently stain and water repellent, these fabrics can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life. Those days of worrying about spilling wine on the sofa are over
At Cat Dal Interiors we always try to add an element of playfulness into every space we design. A great way to add character is to select a fun printed fabric and pairing this with an upholstered cushion. For a recent residential project of ours, we designed a luxurious and whimsical living room. Picking a colour from the Kit Kemp Mural, we selected a green velvet for the statement sculptural sofa. One of the armchairs was a vintage find and we had this upholstered in a patterned and textured fabric. We designed a drinks area designated for entertaining guests by the beautiful bay Victorian windows. We opted for a bespoke voluptuous shaped banquet and selected a luxurious blue velvet which paired well with the blue walls and brass fittings. Our careful process of fabric selection enabled us to create a space of luxurious escape.
